| At Performance Institute, we know that without a strong foundation, you’ll never reach your full potential in strength, mobility, or injury resistance. Your “foundation” isn’t just your core—it includes your hip and shoulder girdles as well. We emphasize fundamental movement patterns like the squat, hinge, press, and pull. But, just as importantly, we teach clients how to perform targeted activation exercises for the little muscles of the shoulder and hips that are game-changers for injury prevention, strength, and mobility. |
|
| These “small but mighty” exercises are seamlessly integrated into warm-ups, used as fillers between sets, or even assigned as quick homework exercises that fit into your daily routine—delivering big results with minimal time investment. |
|
| One of my favorites? The Shoulder Box. |
| Why should you do the Shoulder Box? |
|
| Requires zero equipment |
| Beneficial for everyone, regardless of fitness level |
| Can be done anywhere, anytime |
| Takes less than a minute and can be performed 1-3 times daily |
| Improves posture and reinforces proper shoulder blade positioning for safer, stronger lifts |
| Ready to try it? Here’s how: |
|
| Stand tall with your arms hanging naturally at your sides, palms facing inward. |
| Gently shrug your shoulders toward your ears without creating excessive tension. |
| Pull your shoulder blades back together, opening up your collarbones. |
| Maintain that open-chest position, then press your middle fingers downward as if reaching toward the floor. |
| Hold for 2-3 seconds, then relax back to your natural posture. |
| Repeat for 10 reps. |
|
| 💡 Pro Tip: Once you master the movement, try doing it whenever you’re stuck at a stoplight—just keep your hands on the wheel! |
